Embedding Career Development Learning (CDL) in Nurse Education
Embedding Career Development Learning (CDL) in the Diploma of Nursing equips students with the skills and confidence needed for a successful and timely entry into the nursing profession.
The transition from student to Enrolled Nurse (EN) can be challenging and overwhelming. After completing a two-year program, new graduates often feel isolated and unsupported as they navigate the job market and adapt to the EN role.
Many new graduates feel emotionally unprepared and lack confidence in their nursing abilities and skills. Research findings from my previous studies, combined with feedback from students and graduates, have guided an initiative to incorporate Career Development Learning (CDL) into the curriculum.
Since introducing CDL three years ago in the Diploma of Nursing at Victoria University, more graduates have been offered graduate programs or aligned EN positions and successful outcomes.
Results indicate that the education, application, and confidence provided throughout the course are key factors in promoting professional identity, developing resilience, and maintaining motivation to overcome obstacles and achieve their aspirations.
