Teacher’s strategies and teacher’s attitudes and influence on students’ learning

By Dr Vivienne Decleva

Teacher’s strategies and teacher’s attitudes and influence on students’ learningOver the last twenty years there has been an abundance of literature on adult learning. Such writings describe a number of strategies useful to assist adults to learn.

However, these are only strategies. Their effectiveness is determined on how they are applied by the teacher. If the teacher applies them in response to the students’ needs and has a genuine commitment to help the students, then the learning environment becomes warm, accepting and safe for all in it.

Consequently, students are more at ease, engaged and motivated to achieve their learning outcomes.

Often we place so much emphasis on teaching strategies but what we also need to consider is the teacher’s attitudes, enthusiasm and the encouragement provided, all of which will also influence students’ learning.
